Five leading telecommunications operators involved in the 8ra Initiative – Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, TIM, and Vodafone – are currently presenting a significant milestone for European digital sovereignty at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona: a successful live demonstration of the “European Edge Continuum,” the first federated edge cloud connecting their networks across the continent.

A Unified Infrastructure for Europe

The “European Edge Continuum” allows developers and industrial customers to deploy applications across multiple operators’ nodes through a single-entry point. Connecting these edge environments allows apps to run seamlessly across all participating European networks while also balancing workloads automatically for improved performance and efficiency.

Enabling Industrial Innovation

The presented solution addresses the technical needs of the industrial sector, especially regarding low latency and security. The infrastructure also provides a secure foundation for AI-based quality control in sectors like manufacturing and intelligent traffic management in smart cities, ensuring that data sovereignty and European values remain at the core of the digital transformation.
