The ECOTWIN (Edge-Cloud Operative Digital Twin) project is developing a hybrid platform for implementing technical digital twins in industrial and building technology applications. Its goal is to enable efficient, AI-driven analysis, monitoring, and optimisation of time-critical technical processes, such as chemical reactors, industrial furnaces, or building climate control systems.

ECOTWIN leverages the computational power of the cloud for AI training and simulations while utilising the real-time responsiveness of edge computing to create robust, reliable, and transparent AI systems. A modular architecture ensures seamless integration of new applications and technologies.

The consortium consists of three core partners: IANUS Simulation GmbH, serving as the project lead, alongside TU Darmstadt and TU Dortmund, supported by numerous technology partners. Use cases from industrial and building technology domains, such as optimising chemical reactors and intelligent climate control in buildings, demonstrate the platform’s practical applicability. ECOTWIN contributes to strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty, lowering entry barriers for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and advancing sustainable, future-oriented technologies.
