Railway-X is developing a secure and trusted data space for the railway industry, enabling the exchange of relevant data such as CO₂ footprints and battery passport information. By leveraging cloud, edge, and data space technologies, the project ensures efficient and secure data processing.

A key application is the digital battery passport, which integrates both static and dynamic operational data, captured and processed in real-time via edge computing. Railway-X is also testing technologies for the dynamic distribution of computing resources and contributes to the digital sovereignty of the European railway industry by reducing dependence on non-European hyperscalers and safeguarding data sovereignty.

By accelerating digital transformation in a sector that has traditionally been slow to digitalise, the project establishes an open foundation for future applications. By the end of the project, a near-operational data space will be in place, with the battery passport as the first market-ready use case, implemented in line with EU regulations.
